Food prices are falling – for the first time in four years

For the first time in four years, the Matpriskollen is now noting falling food prices.

– It is big. It shows that consumer power works, says Ulf Mazur, founder of the Matpriskollen.

According to Matpriskollen, food prices fell back by 0.3 percent in April compared to the same month last year. According to Ulf Mazur, it is the first time in four years that a drop in prices has been noted.

Several reasons are believed to be behind it – not least the so-called price war that was started by Lidl at the end of March.

– Lidl started this faster than many competitors thought and it has focused on price reductions, says Ulf Mazur.

The goods that fell the most

Among the goods that fell the most in price during April, we find fruit, berries, vegetables and dairy products, but meat and bread also became cheaper. At the other end we have seafood that continued to steam upwards.

Ulf Mazur’s tip for those who want to reduce their food costs is to keep hunting extra prices and invest in products that are in season.

– You can shop much more vegetarian, it is often cheaper, he says.
