Ica, Coop and Axfood are recalling eggs after salmonella was discovered in the stables where the eggs were laid. For Ica, the recall applies to two million eggs.
Anyone who bought recalled eggs is asked to advertise the product in the first place in the store where the purchase was made.
– It is clear that there will be a large number of eggs, says Magnus Törnblom, press manager for Axfood.
Big eruption in January
At the turn of the year, several food chains recalled egg packages due to the risk of salmonella. The outbreak was described by the Public Health Agency as unusually large and several people were infected, including the Gustafsson family, whose one-year-old son Dion became completely dehydrated and exhausted.
The Swedish Food Agency tells TV4 Nyheterna that it may be the same strain of salmonella as in the previous outbreak in mid-January. The outbreak is at Sweden’s largest egg producer.
A large number of hens have had to be euthanized in the past year, but there is currently no risk of an egg shortage in Sweden, according to Magnus Törnblom.
“Coop takes the incident very seriously and is investigating with the supplier how this could have happened. The goods can pose a health hazard, but when heated to 70 degrees, the salmonella bacteria dies,” writes Coop in a press release.
