On the eve of a labor strike that threatens to shut down London and area schools, classrooms were hit early Thursday with another disruption – fog.
The school bus website bigyellowbus.ca has reported widespread delays and cancellations throughout the city and region for both the Thames Valley and London District Catholic school boards affecting hundreds of schools.
Environment Canada has issued a fog advisory for much of southern Ontario, warning of near zero visibility and hazardous driving conditions.
Oxford OPP is reminding drivers to use the full lighting system in their vehicles in the heavy fog blanketing the area.
Many of the bus cancellations are for the morning only, as fog is expected to lift later in the day.
“Near zero visibility in fog is expected or occurring. Fog is expected to dissipate late this morning,” Environment Canada said.
“Visibility may be significantly and suddenly reduced to near zero. Travel is expected to be hazardous due to reduced visibility.”
There are a few schools where routes are canceled because of a driver shortage.
As for the labor disruption, the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) gave notice workers — such as early childhood educators, educational assistants and custodians — will walk off the job Friday, closing schools.
