The emergency department at the hospital in Malmö has been hit by an invasion of flies. An employee tells Sydsvenskan that small, black flies have settled in, among other things, wounds and food. The problem has been going on since last summer.

– Flies in a hospital environment are extremely inappropriate, we shouldn’t have flies there. We run a business that requires a clean environment, says Oskar Hammar, operations manager for emergency healthcare at Skåne University Hospital.

“A sanitary hazard and unsustainable working environment,” the employee told the newspaper.

– It is an inconvenience for patients and staff. Therefore, we need to resolve this as quickly as possible, says Oskar Hammar.

Special light traps have been set up and the hospital is also investigating more solutions to deal with the problem.

– At the moment, we have assessed that we can continue to run the business, but we need to follow the development, says Hammar to Sydsvenskan.
