“Flowed like a fountain from the toilet”

Flowed like a fountain from the toilet

Andrea’s basement flooded when he and his wife were watching a movie.

It took two and a half hours for the emergency services to get all the water out.

– It would have been nice to have a swimming pool in the basement, but not with this water, says Andreas Solhemmer.

Last Saturday night, Andreas Solhemmer, 41, was watching Guardians of the Galaxy 3 with his wife when he suddenly heard a rippling sound. The incident, which took place in Tösse outside Åmål, has SVT Värmland also reported on.

– I thought the sound was coming from outside at first, but then I went down to the basement and to my dismay I see that it flows like a fountain from the toilet, says Andreas.

Andreas asked his wife to come down and help in the flooded basement space to save what could be saved.

– It was just a matter of stuffing down two towels and a boot to see if it could help. But in vain, he says.

Got the whole basement flooded

– When we lift the boxes into the water, the power is still on, so we got a few shocks, says Andreas.

– It was just a matter of turning off the power and continuing to work, he says.

The family pumped out some of the water with submersible pumps before Karlstad’s rescue team came to the rescue. After two and a half hours, almost all the water was gone.

Mopping up the last

When Aftonbladet reaches Andreas Solhemmer, almost a day has passed since the flood. With the family, they are now trying to mop to try to get out the remaining layer of water that has settled “like a film” on the basement floor.

They are waiting for the insurance company to see if it is possible to get compensation for the things destroyed by the water.

– The daughter is in despair. She is about to start studying and has nothing left anymore. What could be saved was an Ikea case that floated around in the water, he says.

Not the first time it’s happened

Andreas says that it is not the first time floods have hit the area.

– We live in a sensitive area where stormwater does not disappear, but is instead pushed back to the house.

– We knew it would rain but not this much, says Andreas.

Andreas tells us that despite the flood he is in a good mood and that there is no point in crying over spilled milk.

– It would have been nice to have a swimming pool in the basement, but not with this water, says Andreas Solhemmer.
