Two planes with migrants took off on Wednesday from Florida to the resort island of Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts. The transport is described as part of a new tactic in which Republican governors send migrants from their states to more liberal areas.

Already in April, Texas Governor Greg Abbott began sending thousands of migrants by bus to Democratic-controlled cities, such as Washington, New York and Chicago. Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey began a similar strategy in May and has since been sending Arizona migrants to Washington.

Florida Governor Ron DeSanti’s latest move is seen as an escalation of the tactic, which is used to draw attention to the migration issue in the United States ahead of the midterm elections in November, which Republicans believe the Democrats and President Joe Biden mishandled.

Martha’s Vineyard, which has a resident population of about 15,000 people, is less prepared to receive migrants than major cities such as Washington and Chicago, but has quickly coordinated to accommodate the passengers on DeSanti’s plane.

Florida is the first state to use aircraft for the transport, and has set aside $12 million for continued transport.

As long as the people in question sign that the move is voluntary, the method is legal.

– Massachusetts, New York and California will take better care of these individuals, whom they invited into our country by encouraging illegal migration because they refer to themselves as “sanctuary states” and support the Biden administration’s open border policy, says DeSantis press director Taryn Fenske.
