With Avatar: The Way of Water, James Cameron once again proves himself as a box office king and breaks one record after another. Over $2.3 billion recorded the sequel he directed. However, he had less luck as a producer with the ambitious science fiction film Alita: Battle Angel.
The film adaptation of the Battle Angel Alita manga, released in 2019, was one of Cameron’s big passion projects. Since the early 1990s he wanted to tell the story of the titular character Cyborg warrior bring to the screen. Although the finished film was pretty good, it failed to impress at the box office.
Alita: Battle Angel new on Netflix: Hope for part 2 of the sci-fi film is not yet lost
With a budget of between $150 and $200 million (excluding marketing costs), Alita: Battle Angel grossed $405 million, according to Box Office Mojo. That sounds like a lot of money. However, it wasn’t enough for a resounding success. There is still hope for part 2 not yet died. On the contrary: Shortly before the launch of Avatar 2 there was a hopeful update for Alita 2.

How realistic is Alita: Battle Angel 2 really? And when can we expect a cinema release?
Under the hashtag #AlitaArmy Fans have been sharing their love for the first part for years and wishing for a sequel. The only question is: How realistic is Alita: Battle Angel 2 really? Because if we’re honest: the project hasn’t made much progress so far. And there has been no official announcement yet.
The tragic death of Jon Landau in July 2024 may have taken a lot of the wind out of Alita: Battle Angel 2’s sails. Landau was the one most vocal advocates of the film. Previously, James Cameron even hinted that several Alita sequels were in the works. However, he didn’t get much more specific.
Despite hopeful updates making the rounds here and there, the current status of Alita: Battle Angel 2 is uncertain. The fact that a film is in development can mean many things in Hollywood. At least Cameron doesn’t seem to have lost sight of the series yet – and that’s generally a good sign.
