In what is being described as the worst floods in the country in nearly 20 years, major dams on the Barak River have burst and over 100 villages in the Zakiganj district in the northeast are under water.
New downpours are expected in India, which will fill the rivers and cause further flooding in the area. At the same time, the authorities warn that the dams can only be repaired when the water has receded.
