Floods kill victims in Somalia

During the week, heavy rains and flash floods hit the central parts of Somalia hard. According to initial estimates, 22 people have died and more than 450,000 have been affected by the floods, the United Nations humanitarian aid agency (Ocha) said on Sunday.

About 219,000 inhabitants of the country have been displaced from their homes, mainly in flood-prone areas, and the devastation in the wake of the water masses is great.

According to the UN’s situation report, water has, among other things, flowed into homes and onto agricultural land, washed away livestock, damaged roads and temporarily forced schools and healthcare facilities to close.

The disaster comes shortly after a record drought that has worsened the situation for millions of Somalis who are on the brink of famine.
