Heavy rains have led to floods in the Darfur region of western Sudan. At least 12 people have been killed since heavy rains began on Friday in the province of Southern Darfur, according to the UN Coordinating Body for Emergency Relief OCHA.

More than 500 people are to be affected and more than 100 homes have been destroyed in an area inhabited mainly by refugees. The UN refugee agency UNHCR is working to provide assistance to the affected areas.

According to OCHA, more than 9,300 people have been affected by floods in several provinces since the rainy season began in June. The rainy season in Sudan usually lasts until September. Last year, more than 80 people died and tens of thousands of houses were affected.
