Floods hit the Australian state of Queensland. Queensland authorities said that heavy rains caused floods in some points in the city of Cairns, a tourist center located north of the state’s capital, Brisbane, and where approximately 170 thousand people live. It was stated that properties in the region may experience floods with the approaching tide and ongoing rains, and in the statement made by Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES), residents of the region were advised to move to higher places.
In the statement made by Cairns Local Disaster Management, it was announced that tens of thousands of people in the region were left without electricity due to heavy rains. It was noted that many houses, vehicles and bridges were flooded, and a warning was made: “Electricity, water, sewage and telephone services may be cut off in the region.”
Weather forecasters in Australia predicted “life-threatening flash floods” in Cairns, which opens onto the Great Barrier Reef, and said water levels could exceed the 4.1-metre flood peak recorded in 1971 later today.
