Sweden and the other affected countries have jointly tried to persuade Iran to take full responsibility for the downing, to publicly apologize to the affected families and to take measures to prevent similar events from happening again. But the negotiations have been slow.
According to Shahram Tajik’s brother Mohammad, Iran has offered money to the family but they have declined.
– We don’t want their money, we want justice. We want to know why it happened and that those responsible are held accountable, says Mohammad Tajik.
“Have no confidence in the court”
In July 2023, Sweden, Canada, Great Britain and Ukraine turned to the International Court of Justice in The Hague to demand responsibility and compensation.
But it is a viscous process. Today, October 16, 2024, the countries must submit their claim to the court. A claim that Iran then has a whole year to respond to.
– I have no confidence in the court. They will only demand that they pay money. More than that will not happen, says Mohammad Tajik.
