Hundreds of people have been rescued by helicopter and boat after extreme rivers submerged entire communities in southeastern Australia.

Over 1,000 people have been forced to evacuate and the rivers have destroyed infrastructure such as roads and bridges.

People had to climb onto rooftops to escape the rivers and in the worst-hit state of New South Wales, more than 200 people have been rescued using helicopters in the past 24 hours.

This is the fourth major flooding crisis to hit eastern Australia this year and has its origins in a rare weather phenomenon known as La Nina, which means winds from the Pacific Ocean blow stronger and more persistently towards Australia than usual.
