The fifth beta of iOS has just been released by Apple. It inaugurates the display of the battery percentage directly on the battery icon.

Five years. That’s how long it took for Apple to show the battery percentage on the iPhone screen again. In the fifth developer beta of iOS 16, Apple resurrected this simple, but sorely lacking feature in the iPhone.

As a reminder, the battery percentage had disappeared when the iPhone X was released in 2017. The reason was at the time that the new notch, in which the FaceTime camera is hidden, did not leave enough space in the bar of status to view it. Since that time, only the battery icon allowed to have an idea (rather imprecise) of the remaining autonomy on the device. Showing the battery percentage was still possible, but required additional manipulation. It was indeed necessary to expand the control center to make it appear on the screen.

Now, iOS 16 is able to display the remaining battery percentage directly on the battery icon. When the iPhone is connected to a power source, the charging icon is also displayed next to the battery percentage. However, the option is not enabled by default and must be set manually. To do this, go to the iOS Settings, then in the menu dedicated to the Battery activate the appropriate option. Be careful however, it seems that all iPhones are not housed in the same boat.

Some models would indeed be left on the sidelines. This is the case, a priori, of the iPhone XR, iPhone 11, iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 13 mini. With iOS 16 still in beta, Apple still has a few weeks to change its mind and bring the feature to all devices.
