The scandal surrounding the Canadian Hockey Association goes back twenty years.
The current sexual crimes scandal around the Canadian Hockey Association started already in the summer of 2018. We gathered the most significant twists and turns of the events here.
Summer 2018
The Canadian Ice Hockey Federation organizes a charity gala in London, Ontario, which celebrates, among other things, the youth world champion team of the same winter. After the gala, a young woman is suspected of being the victim of a sexual crime in a local hotel.
According to her words, the then 20-year-old victim had agreed to have sex with one player, after which seven other players entered the room and forced the woman into sexual acts. Golf clubs had been brought into the room to scare the victim and the events had been filmed. The victim was also prohibited from telling the authorities about it.
Five of the players were part of Canada’s 2018 Junior World Cup gold team.

Summer 2018
The woman files a criminal complaint, undergoes medical examinations and meets with the London police several times. He accuses eight players of rape.
February 2019
The London police are investigating the matter, but no charges will be laid.
April 2022
The London police reopen the investigation. The case is being prosecuted and the alleged victim is demanding $3.5 million in compensation from the Canadian Hockey Association, the CHL, Canada’s junior hockey umbrella organization, and eight players. The woman accuses the players of rape and the union for not doing anything even though it knew about the incident.
The Canadian Ice Hockey Federation reaches an agreement with the affected person on compensation outside the courtroom. The Canadian Ice Hockey Federation says it has paid the compensation of all the accused.
May-June 2022
Canadian media TSN reveals the victim has reached a settlement with the Canadian Hockey Association over the rape incident and thus the charges have been dropped.
TSN’s revelation is an immediate scandal and the matter is being pushed all the way to the Canadian House of Representatives. The House of Representatives started its own investigation into the case. The NHL is also launching its own investigation, because some of the accused may play in the league.
After the hearings in the House of Representatives, many of the partners of the Canadian Hockey Association are ending their cooperation with the association. In addition, the Canadian government freezes government subsidies for the sport for the time being.
After the revelations, the Canadian Ice Hockey Association claims in its press release that it investigated the matter in the summer of 2018, but says that at the time the victim was unwilling to speak more to the association than to the external investigator it hired.
July 2022
The London police are reopening the investigation. According to the police, they have reason to suspect that five players raped a woman in London in 2018.
The Canadian Hockey Association says in a hearing of the House of Representatives that since 1989, in 21 different cases, it has paid victims of sexual crimes $8.9 million to silence the victims. The association had established its own fund for the cases, which was financed, among other things, by membership fees.

July 2022
The Halifax police announce that they are opening an investigation into the alleged rape at the 2003 World Youth Championships. of TSN’s sources according to about half a dozen of the team’s players are suspected of sexually assaulting a woman during the 2003 World Junior Championships. According to sources, the players had filmed the events and filmed the events.

October 2022
The Canadian Ice Hockey Federation says that its CEO and the entire board will resign due to the scandal.

The London police issue orders to the five players to appear before the deadline. The players face charges of rape. In the coming days, four professional players from the NHL and one from Switzerland have reportedly been sidelined from the activities of their clubs “due to personal reasons”. Each of the players was part of Canada’s 2018 World Cup gold team.
