At least five people were killed in connection with the protests and the storming of the UN headquarters in Goma in eastern Congo-Kinshasa on Monday, the government announced.
Hundreds of protesters smashed windows and ransacked the premises, while UN staff fled in helicopters and security forces fired tear gas at the attackers. The UN’s logistics center outside the city was also stormed.
At least five were killed and around 50 were injured, writes government spokesperson Patrick Muyaya on Twitter.
The unrest continued on Tuesday, and one man was shot dead, according to AFP. Demonstrators outside the logistics center carried placards reading “Goodbye Monusco”, referring to the UN peacekeeping force.
Also in the cities of Beni and Butembo in North Kivu province, protests against the UN arose, according to witnesses.
The demonstrators demand that the UN peacekeeping force leave the country.
Monusco has been criticized locally for what is seen as a failure to stop the fighting in the country’s conflict-torn east.
