Five 99ers selected in OHL draft

The Brantford Minor Hockey Association’s under-16 AAA 99ers team had five players selected in this weekend’s Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection, including a pair in the first round.

Brantford players Lucas Karmiris and Marek Vanacker made history when they became the first players from a 99ers team to be selected in the first round of the OHL draft in the same year.

Karmiris, a Brantford native, was selected 13th overall by the Mississauga Steelheads while Vanacker, a Delhi native, was taken 23rd overall by the Hamilton Bulldogs.

Following those two selections, Braydon McCallum was the next 99er to be chosen as the Delhi native was picked in the fourth round (69th overall) by the Peterborough Petes.

Mississauga then selected another BMHA player when it chose Gabriel Chiarot in the seventh round (136th overall). Chiarot is a Hamilton native.

Tommy Karmiris, Lucas’ cousin, was the last 99er picked when Kingston selected him in the ninth round (179th overall). Karmiris is also from Brantford.

Michael Misa, an underage player from the Mississauga Senators, was the first player selected in the draft when Saginaw chose him.
