Fans have been waiting for this film adaptation for over 20 years. We’re of course talking about the fantasy epic Wicked, which is based on the Broadway musical of the same name and tells a slightly different version of the Technicolor masterpiece The Wizard of Oz. Now you can see the first trailer, which promises a visually stunning screen spectacle.

The story of Wicked begins long before a certain Dorothy travels from Kansas via hurricane to the magical land of Oz is transported. Here we follow the young witch Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo), who was labeled an outsider her whole life because of her green skin color. At the glamorous magic school Glizz, she finds an unexpected confidant in the spoiled G(a)linda (Ariana Grande). But fate has other plans for them both.

After In the Heights, director Jon M. Chu is filming an acclaimed Broadway musical for the big screen for the second time. The stage play, based on a novel by Gregory Maguire, has been running since 2003 and has since grossed over $1.5 billion (via Broadwayworld). Second place among the most successful musicals of all time – right behind The Lion King.
In addition to the two-time Grammy winner Ariana Grande and Tony and Grammy winner Cynthia Erivo, other well-known stars are also part of the cast of the fantasy film adaptation: Jonathan Bailey (Bridgerton) as the love interest of the witch duo, Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh as the school principal ( and Weather Witch!) and Jeff Goldblum as the legendary Wizard of Oz.
Fantasy epic in two parts: When does Wicked start in cinemas?
Wicked starts on November 28, 2024 in German cinemas. But this will only be the first part of the epic fantasy story, which will be released in two parts. The conclusion of the story of the later Wicked Witch of the West will be shown in cinemas a year later, from December 25, 2025.
