The Spiderwick Chronicles was originally intended to be a Disney+ fantasy series

The Spiderwick Chronicles is the series adaptation of the children’s book series by Holly Black and Tony DiTerlizzi, which was made into the 2008 film The Secrets of the Spiderwicks. It tells the story of the Grace siblings, who move to a rustic family property in Michigan after their parents separate. There they discover that Mythical creatures and magical creatures are real are. And some of them are pretty vicious.

The still relatively unknown young stars Lyon Daniels, Noah Cottrell and Mychala Lee can be seen in the three main roles. The cast also includes Christian Slater as the evil ogre (!) Mulgarath and Shazam star Jack Dylan Grazer as the boggart Thimbletack.

The series adaptation was developed by Aron Eli Coleite, who previously served as showrunner for the short-lived Netflix zombie series Daybreak. The Spiderwick Chronicles consists of eight episodes and adapts the first and fifth volumes the five-part book template.

The Spiderwick Chronicles was originally announced as an original series on the Disney+ streaming service, which most recently serialized another popular young adult book series, Percy Jackson. In August 2023, Disney decided against publishing even though the series was already finished at that point. According to Deadline, the streaming service wanted to save costs. The provider Roku rushed to the rescue a little later and secured the streaming rights for the US market.

In the US is The Spiderwick Chronicles from April 19, 2024 on the free streaming service The Roku Channel. All eight episodes of the first season are available straight away.
