The Walking Dead ended last November after 11 seasons. The story of the zombie apocalypse is far from over and will be continued with several spin-off series. The first of these, The Walking Dead: Dead City, brings back Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and Maggie (Lauren Cohan) in an all-new setting. Before the US start, the first reviews have now been published. They draw a split conclusion.
Maggie and Negan’s The Walking Dead return has met with mixed reviews
Dead City is the 4th spin-off of the TWD universe and takes place a few years after The Walking Dead finale. Maggie’s son Hershel was kidnapped to New York City. To save him, she resorts to the help of her former arch-enemy, the murderer of her husband Glenn, of all people.
First the good news for anyone who has ever abandoned The Walking Dead and are fundamentally interested in the new Maggie Negan show. According to Collider, Dead City offers a good respawn point: “While there are some details it harks back to from the main series, it functions as a compact narrative that will pick up on viewers unfamiliar with the previous seasons.“

Negan and Maggie in The Walking Dead: Dead City
Collider praises Deady City as “the strongest story The Walking Dead has had in years“.”Darker, harsher and even more cruel than its predecessors“, The Wrap describes the tone of the spin-off, which The Knockturnal says “the most disgusting zombies” disgusting. The sober conclusion of Coming Soon, on the other hand, is less euphoric: “A totally average series.“
The Walking Dead: Dead City has a fantastic setting but weak supporting characters
The two stars of the series received a lot of praise. The still-simmering conflict, moral antagonisms, and constant bickering between Maggie and Negan are said to be at the heart of the series. But Looper criticized: “While what happened to Glenn will always remain a matter between Maggie and Negan, it would be nice if the two were brought together by something other than that“.
Away from the central duo, however, Dead City weakens when it comes to the supporting characters and commits according to Gamespot “some of the same mistakes made too many times on the main show“. Specifically, that means: The series”spends too much time with characters we’ve only just met that feel inauthentic and uninteresting.”

What The Walking Dead: Dead City can particularly score with is the new setting of New York, which has been dilapidated and overrun by the undead for almost 15 years. The Walking Dead used forest backdrops for years. Dead City now brings “something completely new and original” into this series world, as CoveredGeekly describes. Some reviews even draw comparisons to HBO’s post-apocalyptic series hit The Last of Us.
Fans can also look forward to the zombie front. “The special effects make-up is outstanding. Above all, a handy puppet monstrosity that’s the coolest walker ever created in this universe.”, raves Comicbook.com . Does that mean the terrifying horror creature from the trailer?
Anyone who thought The Walking Dead: Dead City was a 6-part concluding epilogue for the characters Maggie and Negan might be disappointed. The series is supposed to be open and end on a cliffhanger, who is preparing another season. According to Movieweb, the ending is nevertheless thematic “absolutely perfect“.
