First reactions to the additional tax on Chinese electric vehicles

Ali Haydar Bozkurt, who recently announced an important step regarding the arrival of Chinese BYD in Turkey, evaluated the additional taxes announced hours ago.

We continue to receive developments regarding the entry of Chinese-based automobile manufacturers to the Turkish market after Europe, together with 2023. After Chery, it was announced that BYD, the world’s largest electric car manufacturer, would be brought to Turkey through ALJ Group, which also assumed the distributorship of Toyota. Shortly after BYD’s arrival in Turkey, which Toyota and ALJ Turkey President and CEO Ali Haydar Bozkurt saw as a very important step, a very serious additional customs tax was introduced in Turkey for Chinese electric cars. Ali Haydar Bozkurt, who is the Chairman of ODMD (Automotive Distributors and Mobility Association) in addition to his duties at Toyota and ALJ, evaluated the additional customs tax published in the Official Gazette.

Ali Haydar Bozkurt; “The step taken for electric car models of Chinese origin is not surprising”

With the steps of Chinese automakers to open up to the European market, we often witness that well-established names in the market make warnings in this direction. Calls for “additional tax on competition”, especially emphasized by Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares, are still on the agenda.

Emphasizing that Turkey’s taking a step in this direction is in line with the expectations in Europe, Ali Haydar Bozkurt emphasized that the process is not surprising. In Bozkurt’s statements; “As we all know, there is a rapid BEV (battery electric vehicle) transformation process in the automotive industry. In this regard, the Chinese origin brands, which act very quickly and have the advantage of a lithium-ion source, have a cost advantage. As it is known, lithium-ion stands out as an important material of batteries, which constitute a large part of the cost of all-electric vehicles.

In European countries, where electric vehicles are expected to become widespread, it will not be surprising that similar applications are on the agenda in order to balance the competition against Chinese brands that want to enter the market intensively. Considering that the world’s major automotive brands are also of European origin, it is understandable that Europe wants to protect its own automotive ecosystem. It is in question that these measures will pave the way for Chinese brands that want to enter the market to invest in production in Europe and especially in Turkey. We hope that we, as Turkey, will benefit from these new investment opportunities.” made statements.
