Reports have been mounting in recent weeks that soon-to-be ex-Witcher star Henry Cavill will not return as the Man of Steel as announced. Now there is the official confirmation.
Two months after announcing his return to the role on Instagram, Henry Cavill again sent a message to his fans. It was a bad one this time. But that is not how it remains. Because the new DC creative head James Gunn (The Suicide Squad) revealed last night, where the Superman journey will go without Cavill.
Here’s what Henry Cavill says about his Superman exit
On Instagram, Cavill wrote:
I just had a meeting with [DC Studios-CEOs] James Gunn and Peter Safran and I have sad news. I’m not going back as Superman after all. After me the studio [Warner Bros.] had said in October to announce my return – before [James Gunn und Peter Safran] were hired – this news is not easy for me. I respect that James and Peter have to build a universe. I wish them and everyone involved in the new universe luck […].
On October 24, Cavill announced his return as Superman, which came with a cameo appearance at the end of Black Adam. Two days later, James Gunn and Peter Safran were announced as CEOs of DC Studios. Both have been tasked with reshaping the DC Universe, and Henry Cavill appears to have no place in that.
James Gunn Confirms Cavill’s DC Exit, Reveals Superman Details
James Gunn also took to Twitter and revealed details about Superman’s future in cinemas:
Peter and I have a DC plan to get started, which couldn’t make us happier. […] Superman is part of this plan. First of all, our story to an earlier phase of Superman’s life focus, so the character isn’t played by Henry Cavill.
Gunn did not rule out a future collaboration with Cavill, in fact he wrote about one “Range of Exciting Opportunities”that could be addressed in the future. However, the statements made by Henry Cavill in particular indicate that there are currently no concrete plans for a different return to the DC Universe.

That is by the way not the only Superman movie, which is being developed at DC Studios. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ta-Nehisi Coates is still working on a screenplay for the Black Superman movie planned by JJ Abrams.
