Hardly any other director has shaped Japanese animation films as much as Hayao Miyazaki. His masterpieces such as Spirited Away or My Neighbor Totoro made the genre well known beyond Japan. After his 2013 film As the Wind Rises, Miyazaki wanted to actually retiringbut now a new work by him is appearing.

An intoxicating fantasy adventure awaits us with The Boy and the Heron, for which you can now watch the first teaser trailer. In Japan, the film was shrouded in the utmost secrecy before it was released in cinemas.

That’s what Hayao Miyazaki’s new animated film is supposed to be about

In The Boy and the Heron, a boy named Mahito, missing his mother, enters one Fantasy world between life and death. Much more is not known about the story of Miyazaki’s new film, but the first scenes from the teaser trailer reveal the usual qualities of the Japanese.

In Japan, The Boy and the Heron relied on an unconventional release strategy. Since Miyazaki is already catchy enough as a name, no pictures, trailers or a synopsis of the new animated film have been published in advance, apart from a simple poster.

When is The Boy and the Heron in cinemas?

After the film was released in Japan in mid-July, Miyazaki’s (maybe for real this time) final work hits US cinemas on December 8th. A German start date is unfortunately not yet known. We will probably have to wait until 2024.
