First new servers, then the teaser of a big announcement

With patch 5.0.2, the developers of New World introduced a new server technology on June 4, 2024. Almost at the same time, Amazon Games promised a big announcement for the Summer Game Fest.

What kind of new server technology is this? The developers are relying on so-called splitters for the newly introduced server structure of New World. These are different copies of the game world on which the population of the MMORPG will be better distributed in the future.

Amazon Games hopes to use the shards to open up the possibility of allowing more players to come to Aeternum and thus drastically shorten the waiting times. Why? Well, the developers are apparently expecting a large rush of players in the near future.

Why should there be a huge rush of players? We may find out exactly that at the Summer Game Fest on Friday, June 7, 2024. Via X, Amazon Games officials teased an “exciting announcement for New World.”

It would be possible to announce a second expansion. But would it be necessary to adjust the server structure specifically for this? With the first add-on, “Rise of the Angry Earth,” the number of players did increase noticeably for a while, but it was still a long way from the strong launch phase.

We think it is much more likely that a console version of New World will be announced. On the one hand, the combat system is ideal for the controller, and on the other hand, direct competitors such as The Elder Scrolls Online have seen a sharp increase in player numbers thanks to a console launch.

In addition, almost two years ago there was an indication that Amazon Games might be working on a console port of the MMORPG.

Impact of the new servers

How do the splitters work in detail? Back to the new server structure of New World. The developers revealed in the official patch notes of Update 5.0.2 (via Amazon Games) how the shards will affect the gaming experience in detail:

SOCIAL CONNECTIONS

  • groups: Maintain together in the same splitter (as long as capacity allows).
  • Single player: If possible, group with friends or company members in the same shard.
  • Join other splinters: To switch to someone in another shard, you must be in the same area and select “Join Shard” from the Social menu.
  • SOCIAL INTERACTIONS

  • Area chat: Limited to players in the same shard. Global chat remains unchanged.
  • Actions with players nearby: For activities such as trading, music, and dueling, all participants must be in the same shard.
  • PLAYER VS PLAYER

  • Special PvP Shard: Each area has a single shard for PvP to ensure fair play.
  • PvP marking: Players who have been flagged for PvP in non-PvP shards can switch to the PvP shard.
  • First introduction: The division into shards will initially be limited to King’s Rock and Wind Circle. The expansion to other zones depends on feedback and performance.
  • CAMP

  • Camp locations: Camps remain in the shards in which they were placed.
  • Recall to the camp: You can be recalled to the camp site without being forced into the associated shard.
  • Splinter closures: If a shard containing your campsite is closed, the campsite will be removed and you will be notified.
  • What do you think of the new server structure for New World and the teaser from Amazon Games for the Summer Game Fest? What are the developers of the MMORPG announcing? Tell us your opinion in the comments! A dev update from last month was not well received: Amazon’s MMORPG is annoying its players for no reason and in a really stupid way
