The first lapwing egg is traditionally the harbinger of spring and the starting signal for the meadow bird season. But according to Landscape Heritage Utrecht, there has been little cause for celebration in recent years. “Because the meadow birds are not doing well. For us, the first lapwing egg mainly symbolizes the care needed to protect meadow birds such as the lapwing, black-tailed godwit, redshank and oystercatcher.”
