It’s the end of an era. Horror master Mike Flanagan produced one last horror series for Netflix before migrating to Amazon to direct a Stephen King epic. This terminated partnership with Netflix brought us fantastic horror works like Haunted Hill House and Midnight Mass.
Now it’s clear when his final nightmare series The Fall of the House of Usher will start on Netflix. The first pictures show one almost 200 year old horror face in a completely new guise – and lots of stars.
The Fall of the House of Usher reimagines Edgar Allan Poe’s horror stories
The Fall of the House of Usher horror series is a modern take on Edgar Allan Poe’s short story of the same name, first published in 1839. From this and Motifs of numerous other literary works by Poe a standalone spooky tale is formed, dealing with the titular Usher family (and their downfall).
The focus is on Patriarch Roderick Usher (Bruce Greenwood), who leads the powerful company Fortunato Pharmaceuticals. But one day, one by one, his descendants suddenly begin to die under mysterious and extremely brutal circumstances. Roderick must confront his own murky past before his entire family dynasty is wiped out.
Behind the Ushers’ mysterious deaths lies a supernatural presence, a shapeshifter named Verna (Carla Gugino), whose origins are revealed, according to a Netflix press release one of the most famous characters from the works of Edgar Allan Poe is due. The first poster for the horror series already gives a clear indication:

Netflix also released a series of Fall of the House of Usher images, providing a first look at the horror series’ star-studded cast.
In addition to Bruce Greenwood and Carla Gugino, the cast of the Netflix series also includes Star Wars legend Mark Hamill as well as Mary McDonnell and many well-known stars of the “Flanaverse”.
When does The Fall of the House of Usher start on Netflix?
The fall of the House of Usher begins on Netflix on October 12, 2023. The miniseries consists of a total of eight episodes, four of which Mike Flanagan directed himself. Flanagan’s regular cinematographer, Michael Fimognari, directed the remaining episodes.
