Many film fans had already lost faith that we would ever see Megalopolis on the big screen. For decades Francis Ford Coppola (The Godfather) is planning to make the huge science fiction film, for which he recently even sold parts of his winery. But the project kept falling apart.
With 120 million US dollars, which Coppola financed from his own pocket, Megalopolis was finally created against all odds. The sci-fi epic will premiere in Cannes in a few days. Now there is that first real scene from the movie. Yes, Megalopolis really exists! And it is within reach.

In February, Coppola revealed a dark promo image for Megalopolis on his Instagram account. Vanity Fair brings us the first look at the both stars of the film: Adam Driver (Kylo Ren from the Star Wars sequels) and Nathalie Emmanuel (Missandei from Game of Thrones). The story of Megalopolis revolves around a young architect who is… utopian future dreams. He wants to completely renew the destroyed city in which he lives. But opposite him is a very pragmatic mayor (played by Breaking Bad star Giancarlo Esposito) who can’t do anything with his dreams.
When writing the script, Coppola was inspired by, among other things, Roman history and the Works by HG Wells inspired. He was particularly fond of the sci-fi classic Things to Come.
Coppola explains to Vanity Fair:
The foundation for Megalopolis was laid when I saw Things to Come by HG Wells as a child. This Korda classic from the 1930s is about Building the world of tomorrow and he has always accompanied me, first as the scientist in my youth that I was, and later as a filmmaker. Megalopolis has not yet had an official German cinema release. The reason for this is simple: Coppola’s film has not yet found a distributor in this country. The Cannes premiere is in the clear. At the May 17, 2024 Megalopolis will be shown to the trade press for the first time, following a screening for Hollywood personalities and Coppola’s circle of friends in March.
