It reminds local residents of ‘Enschede’, the fireworks disaster in 2000 that left 23 dead, 950 injured and destroyed 200 homes. “Of course, those situations are not comparable,” explains Rob van der Sluis, who lives about 100 meters from the fireworks storage. “But I don’t like the idea of 8,000 kilos of fireworks in your backyard.” Other local residents, who do not want to be named, would also rather lose the fireworks storage than gain anything.
