Violent storms have hit northern Italy and two people have died. A 16-year-old scout died near Brescia after a tree fell on his tent, AFP reports, citing Italian news agencies. Another person in Monza has died after being hit by a tree.
In Milan, torrential rain and hail have fallen over the city. Pictures show how several buildings were destroyed by the storm.
At the same time, forest fires are raging in Sicily, and the airport in Palermo was forced to close due to the nearby fires. Last week, the island’s main airport in Catania was closed due to a fire. Traffic is still affected there, Reuters reports.
Train traffic has also been affected by major disruptions.
During Monday, a temperature of 47.6 degrees was measured in Catania and in 16 cities red warnings have been issued, according to Reuters, which “will likely generate fires with very high fire intensity and extremely fast spread”.
Greece is also hit hard by forest fires. In total, around 20,000 people have been evacuated on Rhodes and over 2,000 people on Corfu.
