“It was in one of the stacks. . . . The oven was overheating,” CKFR Capt. Scott Hammond said.
Oil from the stack caught fire, he said.
Jeanette Brown was driving on St. George Street at about 4:30 p.m.
“I heard a big bang and saw a lot of smoke come up between two buildings,” she said.
Brown, who provided photos of the scene to The Chatham Daily News, said firefighters “were up on the roof and bringing the hose lines up.”
Some workers came out the plant and said the paint line caught fire, she said.
Hammond said there were no injuries.
He said EMS was on scene as a precaution, which included checking the vital signs of firefighters as they came out of the building.
The plant produces torsion and stabilizer bars for the automotive industry.
