Fire marshal probes Byron house fire that caused 800K damage

The Office of the Ontario Fire Marshal and London police are investigating a house fire early Saturday morning in Byron that caused $800,000 in damage.

London firefighters responded to a fire at 365 Foyston Rd., near Byron Baseline and Boler roads, at about 1:30 am Saturday. Crews used a defensive strategy to knock down the flames and managed to contain the fire to the home, the London Fire Department said.

Ontario fire marshal investigators and London police were at the scene of the badly damaged home Saturday afternoon. The fire investigators will work to determine the origin, cause and circumstances of the fire.

Fire investigator Roger Gibson declined to comment further on the investigation on Foyston Road Sunday, saying London police are involved and will provide an update when appropriate.

Damage is estimated at $800,000, London fire officials said.

The Foyston Road fire is the second house fire under investigation by the provincial fire marshal in as many days.

The fire marshal was called to a fire at a home on Briar Court in northeast London Friday afternoon after a fire captain had a medical episode while fighting the fire.

“He was transported to hospital and stayed overnight,” provincial fire investigator Michael Bird said Sunday. “He was released yesterday (Saturday) morning and is at home recovering.”

The provincial fire marshal’s office investigates all fatal fires and ones that are suspicious, explosive-related, linked to drug activity or large loss fires, including ones with a damage estimate over $500,000.
