An entire area of caravans has burned down at a Spanish tourist campsite in Bolnuevo.

Swede Jan-Ove Ericsson cut the awning with a kitchen knife to escape exploding gas tubes.

– It’s a disaster, many caravans burned down, he says.

Winterer Jan-Ove Ericsson was one of all the tourists at the Playa Mazarron campsite, in the Spanish area of Bolnuevo in Mazarron, who woke up to a big bang during the night towards Tuesday.

Flames from a caravan quickly grew into a violent fire, local media reports. The emergency services were called to the scene around 02:00.

The flames were visible from afar, writes Murcia today.

– I woke up the wife and saw that it was fully on fire. It smelled horrible from the smoke. There were probably 30 meter high flames just 50 meters away from our caravan. Large flakes glowed and gas tubes exploded in the air, he says.

A whole “block” of caravans has burned down, reports Murcia today. Three people have been injured in the fire, but no one is seriously injured.

Cut away the tent with a kitchen knife

Several of the tourists have had to be moved to other caravans and accommodation.

“Around 40 caravans and some cars caught fire. It was just a matter of getting dressed and going out on the beach,” writes one of the tourists on his social media.

– It is a disaster, very many wagons and vehicles are parked nearby. There are no special regulations here regarding distance, says Jan-Ove Ericsson.

The flames moved quickly towards Jan-Ove’s caravan. He therefore made the decision to cut the awning with a knife, he says.

– I saw how it was moving towards us and the wind was blowing. My thought was that if the car burns up, we have nowhere to sleep. So I cut the awning away and we took off right away. Other tourists took water hoses and flushed the cars in the hope that it would go well, he says.

“Driving in a burning car”

Around 100 cars left the campsite in a panic, he says

– A German guy was completely shocked and drove in a burning car. The entire side had melted from the fire, the windows hung in plastic.

The fire was extinguished later on Tuesday morning.

– It’s sad when things like that happen, but we have to be happy that we’re alive. We hope to continue eating paella and playing boules at the campsite in the future, says Jan-Ove.
