Fire in Jönköping – tens of people to hospital

About ten people were taken to hospital after a fire in Jönköping and several people are said to be unable to return to their apartments.
The incident is being investigated as arson and one person has been arrested.
– At the moment, we cannot comment on what led up to the arrest, says Angelica Forsberg, press spokesperson at the police.

The fire broke out at 19:30 on Tuesday evening in an apartment building. The emergency services managed to extinguish the fire, but several residents were in need of control and were taken to a nearby hotel. Paramedics were waiting there.

– We are working intensively to find out how the fire started and are doing some technical investigations, says Angelica Forsberg, press spokesperson at the police.

Residents are asked to close doors and windows and wait for instructions from rescue personnel. About ten people were then taken to hospital for a check-up. According to the police, there are no burns, but primarily people who inhaled smoke.

– The fire is isolated to one room, we cannot comment further, says Angelica Forsberg.

Later in the evening, the police announced that a person had been arrested on suspicion of arson and aggravated trespass.

– At the moment, we cannot comment on what led up to the arrest, says Angelica Forsberg.

Police say they are working widely and have a large number of complainants to interview and technical work to do. The larger closures were lifted during the evening, but a smaller closure will remain in place.

– We have quite a lot of investigative work to do, says Angelica Forsberg.

Several of the residents will also not be able to return to their apartments during the evening. They have been hired at another location, the police say.
