A house on Old Hwy 24 and Concession 11 Townsend was destroyed by fire on Wednesday afternoon.

Members of the public called 911 at about 4:45 pm to report the blaze at a property located between Bloomsburg and Waterford.
Flames could be seen through the roof of the century home when Norfolk County firefighters responded to the scene, said Cory Armstrong-Smith, fire prevention officer with the Norfolk County Fire Department, in a media release.
“Firefighters from five Norfolk County stations have the fire under control but not yet extinguished,” Armstrong-Smith said in the release issued at about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Two people were in the structure at the time that the fire broke out. One person was transported to hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation. The person has since been released, Armstrong-Smith said.

Several pets that also escaped the fire are “doing well”, he said.
Armstrong-Smith says the occupants were able to make a timely escape from the structure thanks to working smoke alarms.
The home was destroyed and damaged is estimated at $500,000.
Although the structure was insured, the tenants’ belongings were not.
“As this is a working fire an investigation is in its preliminary stages,” Armstrong-Smith said, adding the cause is not considered suspicious.
Armstrong-Smith also offered words of appreciation to the county roads crews for keeping the roads cleared as firefighters battled the fire.
“The fire department would like to extend our thanks to Norfolk County Roads Department for keeping our workspace salted while we worked with icy conditions,” he said the media release.
