Brantford firefighters were called to the fire at Pho Vietnam 999 at 11:20 pm

Deputy Fire Chief Dwayne Armstrong said smoke was clearly evident when firefighters arrived at the scene.

Armstrong said the design of the roof and the cold temperature made for some difficult conditions, but firefighters did a “great job” extinguishing the fire.

A total of 23 fire personnel were called to the scene.

Armstrong said the occupants had evacuated the building and no injuries were reported.

There is significant damage to the roof of the building.

The fire is under investigation and no cause has yet been determined.

Brantford firefighters were called to another commercial fire back in October. That day-long roof fire destroyed a large portion of Mohawk Plaza on Colborne Street.

When firefighters arrived, they found the west end of the plaza – the vacant Mohawk Bowl – filled with smoke and visible flames. Crews worked overnight to get it under control.

The old bowling alley, the Army and Navy Club and another unit were destroyed. The fire was halted before hitting the large Brantford Surplus store.

Nearby Pauline Johnson Collegiate was closed for a professional development day but the school was open for staff and students the following day.

On social media, people were mourning the loss of the bowling alley, the old Dutch Shop and, particularly, the Army Navy and Air Force Club, home to many celebrations and musical events over the past decades.
