    Former Estonian President Arnold Rüütel dead

    Arnold Rüütel, Estonia’s last communist leader during the Soviet era and the country’s second president after independence, has died.

    Rüütel was elected in 1983 as Chairman of the Supreme Council of the then Soviet Republic, a position he later used to prepare Estonia for independence from the Soviet Union.

    After Estonia regained its independence, in 2001 he was elected President of Estonia after Lennart Meri. Rüüter held the presidency for five years and steered Estonia into NATO and the EU.

    Arnold Rüütel was 96 years old.

    Power is back on in almost all of Puerto Rico

    After a major power outage on New Year’s Eve, the majority of electricity subscribers in Puerto Rico have regained electricity, the energy company Luma Energy announces.

    This means that almost 86 percent – 1.25 million electricity customers – of those affected regained power during the afternoon of New Year’s Day.

    Two of the capital San Juan’s major airports, important water facilities and at least 31 hospitals belong to them, according to the company.

    Puerto Rico often suffers minor power outages due to poor wiring after Hurricane Maria in 2017. But the massive New Year’s Eve blackout shut down virtually the entire island.
