Finnish VR takes over and runs Norrtåg in northern Sweden

Starting in December 2025 and ten years from now, it will be VR Sweden, a subsidiary of the Finnish public transport company, that will be allowed to run on Norrtåg.

– VR had the winning bid. It is always the price that decides in the last line, but overall we believe that we will be able to continue to develop the service well with VR, says Joakim Berg.

There have been a lot of problems with the train service, has that influenced the decision to change companies?

– No, we should not blame Vy for the train problems, especially in Norrbotten. It depends on the infrastructure.

“Really boring”

Vy tåg’s CEO, Dag Lokrantz, comments that they are losing the mission as follows:

– It was really boring. But we have a year and a half left, and we must continue right up to the plate, and deliver with the flag at the top.

The Finnish train company has already been major in Swedish train traffic. They serve many routes and are responsible, among other things, for Pågatågen, Scania’s public transport.

VR’s contract with Norrtåg is worth approximately SEK 3.2 billion.

It has already been decided that Vy will stop running the night trains to Norrbotten, that agreement expires in December 2024.
