It has been messy in the Finnish ice hockey club Jokerit, and it seems to be getting messier.
Now the Finnish icon Teemu Selänne rages against the club.
“One of Finland’s finest sports brands is currently a national sports disgrace,” writes the legend on Twitter.
It was at the turn of August-September 2022 that the Finnish club Jokerit was denied entry into the Finnish top league Liiga. Jokerit has for some time belonged to the Russian league KHL, but in connection with the Russian invasion of Ukraine the club left the league.
The icon strongly critical
The plan was to get back into the Finnish league system, but the application was rejected. Now the saga has taken another turn. Last week it became clear that Jokerit instead sent in an application to play in the Finnish second division Mestis next season.
The article continues after the picture.
The application was supposed to be processed on Tuesday, when it would have been on the union’s agenda. But then all of a sudden that point was missing. The reason? Jokerit had announced that it wanted to withdraw its application as it considered that it was not complete.

“Confusion is absolutely the right word. One of Finland’s finest sports brands is currently a national sporting shame,” writes the 52-year-old icon on his Twitter.
“We’ll make it”
For the Finnish newspaper Ilta-Sanomat, Jokerit’s front man tells Jarmo Koskinen that the club is still aiming to get its application to the second league in on time. It must be submitted by January 31 at the latest.
– I am of the opinion that we will manage it. The licensing procedure is in March and that will be the final verdict, Koskinen told the newspaper.
