Sanni Hakala will never be able to play hockey again.
The Finn has received a lot of support, and now also receives the confederation’s.
– It is heartbreaking, says Finnish national team captain Jukka Jalonen.
It was in HV71’s match against Djurgården at the end of November that True Hakalas lives changed forever. The former HV71 player fell and slid into the post of the Djurgårds goal head first and was left lying down.
Hakala’s injury
The accident occurred with three minutes played in the first period. Hakala was taken to the University Hospital in Linköping where she underwent neck surgery. Afterwards, HV71 came with the news that the operation went well. But a few days later, the 26-year-old came with the news that she has been paralyzed and will never play ice hockey again.

In his social media, Hakala wrote:
“It is still difficult to understand what has happened, that it was so serious, that the consequences were so great. Not only that I am forced to stop playing hockey, but that I may be forced to sit in a wheelchair for the rest of my life. The injury I sustained last Friday after colliding with the goalpost has left me paralyzed from the chest down, with reduced function in my arms and hands.”
Jalonen’s support
The Finn has received a lot of support from various profiles and on social media. Now she also receives the support of the Finnish Hockey Association.
– It is heartbreaking. No matter what sport it is, if someone gets injured and paralyzed in a way in a hobby, it’s a shocking thing. One always hopes that there would be hope that the person would be able to walk again. I don’t know if there is, says Jukka Jalonenthe captain of the Finnish men’s national hockey team, to Iltalehti.

Thanks to the World Championships, the Finnish Hockey Association has made a profit of 23 million euros in the last two years. That is over SEK 260 million. Jalonen believes that some of that money will now be used to support Hakala financially.
– I know that the insurance for female ice hockey players is not that good. I assume there is support from the confederation for rehabilitation. As I have understood, there is help to be had when things become clearer, says the national team captain to the Finnish newspaper.
