Finland may be organizing the World Hockey Championships next year as well – puck boss Harri Nummela: “We have had discussions”

Finland may be organizing the World Hockey Championships next year

According to Harri Nummela, President of the Finnish Hockey Association, Finland and Latvia plan to hold next year’s World Championships together. The future host will be known by the end of May.

– We are exploring the possibility of organizing the competition together with Finland. One block would be played in Riga and the other in Tampere. In the next few days, we will see how things go, President of the Latvian Hockey Association Aigars Kalvitis said to Lata.

Chairman of the Finnish Hockey Association Harri Nummela confirmed to Urheilu that negotiations have taken place with Latvia.

– Yes, we have had discussions on this. Don’t go ahead. No contract has yet been signed and no application has been submitted today.

According to Nummela, at least one other candidate is applying for the 2023 World Cup.

– According to media reports, at least one other application is coming. Hungary is obviously one of the parties.

Nummela considers the organization of competitions with a one-year notice period challenging for any organizing country, including Finland. However, he believes that Finland would be able to hold the World Cup next year as well.

– If we did not believe that, despite the schedule, we will be able to organize the competitions successfully, we would not be looking for them.

According to Nummela, the home race, which starts on Friday, will help organize next year’s race.

– As a result of these competitions, we have a certain basic readiness to organize the competitions.

The 2023 World Hockey Championships were to be held in Russia, but the International Hockey Federation withdrew from the war over Ukraine.

The future World Cup host will be chosen on 26-27. May at the annual meeting of the International Hockey Federation in Tampere in connection with this year’s World Championships.

The World Championships will be played this year in Tampere and Helsinki. The Lions will meet in their opening game on 13.5. Norwegian.
