Finland is welcome if we want to apply for NATO

The Prime Ministers of Finland and Canada discussed the war in Ukraine, sanctions and Finland’s relations with NATO in Brussels. According to Marini, Prime Minister Trudeau emphasized NATO’s open door policy.

BRUSSELS Prime minister Sanna Marin commented on the delivery of less than an hour of discussions on Wednesday night. According to him, the debate highlighted concerns about Ukraine. Finland’s relations with NATO were also discussed at the meeting.

– I also asked about Canada’s views on the current debate in the Nordic countries, Marin says.

– I also told him openly about the process that is going on in Finland, the debate in Parliament, between the institutions and within the parties. This is of great interest to the world.

According to Marin, Canada is committed to NATO’s open door policy.

– There is an open door policy. Finland is welcome if we want to apply for NATO membership. This was the top message.

Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau did not comment on his conversation with Marin after the meeting.

In a statement before the meeting, Trudeau expressed concern about Russia’s attack on Ukraine.

– The strict sanctions we have imposed on Russia are clearly starting to bite. At the same time, we need to think carefully about the security policy framework as a whole, Mr Trudeau said.
