The meeting organized at the official level aims to remove the most important obstacle in the way of Finland and Sweden’s NATO membership.
The NATO meeting of Finland, Sweden and Turkey is in Finland on Friday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs tells .
Previously, it was known that the meeting would be in Finland this week. The exact location or schedule of the meeting has not been announced.
According to SVT, the meeting is to create a mechanism to ensure the implementation of the memorandum approved in Madrid at the end of June.
Turkey has continued to judge
The memorandum of understanding signed by the foreign ministers of Sweden, Finland and Turkey made Turkey give up stopping Finland’s and Sweden’s NATO project.
Despite this, Turkey has continued to be critical of the membership of these countries.
It has not ratified Finland’s or Sweden’s NATO membership, although the majority of member countries have already accepted the matter.
In connection with the meeting of ambassadors held in Helsinki at the beginning of the week, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Finland Pekka Haavisto (Vihr.) said that he had been in contact with the Turkish foreign minister during the summer.
The memorandum of understanding is interpreted at the meeting
Turkey’s negative view is considered a key obstacle to Finland’s and Sweden’s membership.
Haavisto said that at the upcoming meeting, Finland can tell Turkey about Finnish legislation and under what conditions Finland can return the persons requested by Turkey.
According to Haavisto, the ratification process with all other NATO countries is progressing well, and there are no known problems.
Estimates of how long the rationing of Finland’s and Sweden’s NATO memberships will take vary.
