Finding the Night Song in Baldur’s Gate 3 – This is how you solve the puzzles and make your decision

One of the biggest quests in Baldur’s Gate 3 is “Finding the Nightsong”. We’ll show you what you have to do for the quest – and how to complete it.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is full of quests that seem small at the beginning, but then stretch over many hours and several acts. One of these missions is “Find the Nightsong”. We’ll tell you everything you need to know about this quest, how to start it and where it ends.

Spoiler warning: The article contains some spoilers for the quest series surrounding the Shadow Song and their possible outcomes. However, the summary with initial information is spoiler-free.

The Nightsong quest is of particular importance to Shadowheart.

The essentials in brief:

  • You get the quest in Act 1.
  • You can only complete the quest in Act 2 at the earliest, but it can also extend into Act 3.
  • The quest chain has several different endings depending on your decisions.
  • The quest series is of particular importance to Shadowheart and her personal story.
  • How does the quest line begin? You inevitably come across the quest line “Find the Nightsong” during the first act of the game. After your first visit to the Druid Grove, you can meet Liam. Either in the grove itself, outside the grove with his troops or – if he has died – the quest begins with a letter from his corpse.

Alternatively, you can also receive the first clue about the quest from Halsin or Aradin, usually in connection with your mission to attack and eliminate the goblin camp.

In summary, the quest wants you to find the legendary “Night Song” for a powerful magician in Baldur’s Gate and bring it to him. Details about this night song are initially unknown, but it is said to be a powerful weapon of the Shar followers.

At first glance, the mission may seem like a simple side quest, but it has great importance to the game’s plot and runs through the longest part of your adventure.

Tip: Since the quest series surrounding the Nightsong is of particular importance to Shadowheart, we recommend having it with you at all steps of the quest. This is not necessary for completion, but Shadowheart has special dialogues and sometimes unlocks special events and options during this quest series.

Act 1: Finding the Nightsong – Find more clues

The Nightsong is said to be somewhere in the Underdark, so that’s your first clue.

Please note that you basically have no time pressure for this quest series. When searching for the Nightsong, you will come across many other side missions – especially in the Underdark – all of which you can complete at your leisure.

You have several options to get to the Underdark during the first act:

  • Go to the Ruined Sanctuary (the “Goblin Camp”). In the room of the healer Gut, one of the three leaders of the camp, you can discover a staircase with a perception test. The stairs lead into the desecrated temple. There you have to solve a little puzzle with moon disks or alternatively discover and crack a lock (for example with Astarion). Once you’ve done that, a long ladder leads directly into the Underdark to the Selunite outpost.
  • In the small village controlled by the goblins, you can climb into the well. Down there you fight a large spider matriarch and see a deep hole in the ground. Give yourself the Feather Fall spell or use a corresponding potion to jump into the hole and fall into the Underdark.
  • You can find another entrance from Aunt Ethel in her teahouse in the swamp. Climb through the chimney into her lair and make sure to grab one of the scary masks. In the room with the many gas traps, after the waterfall, you can jump onto a raised area. Put the mask on (after defeating Ethel!) and you can go through the wall. A magical mushroom circle teleports you to the Underdark.
  • In a barn next to the “Waukeen’s Rest” inn you will find the Zhentarim’s hiding place behind a hatch in the floor. In the northwest of the hideout you can discover a wall that is just an illusion. You can simply walk through the wall, but conversations with the wolves can also draw your attention to it.
  • Once you have reached the Underdark, you must advance to the west. There you will find a small ship with which you can travel to the Grymschmiede. Explore the area fully and follow the plot. After you have resolved the situation surrounding the “True Soul Nere”, you can go through the passage full of poison gas and open a locked door.

From here you have a view of an old Shar temple, but there doesn’t seem to be a way to enter the temple from here. The quest then continues in Act 2.

Act 2: Finding the Nightsong – The Samples of the Shar

Once you have arrived in the Shadowcursed Lands, you can continue your search for the Nightsong.

Here is a clear warning: Completing this quest, depending on your choices, will quickly advance the story in this area and bring about significant changes. If you want to experience the Shadowcursed Lands in their original state, you should explore a little before embarking on the quest for the Nightsong.

Far in the northwest of the area, west of the river and north of the House of Healing, you can discover the entrance to a Thorm family mausoleum. The mausoleum contains a secret entrance to the Temple of Shar.

To reach the temple, you have to click on the pictures on the wall in the correct order in the farthest room of the mausoleum. The order is:

  • The painting Towers of the Moonrise
  • The painting of grief
  • The general’s painting
  • The paintings must be activated in the correct order.

If you enter it correctly, a hidden entrance will open that leads down into the temple. If you make a mistake, traps will be triggered – but you can try again.

    Access to the deeper temple

There is a lot to do in the Temple of Shar. Not only can you meet Balthazar here, but you can also complete a mission for Raphael, bag lots of powerful scrolls and weapons, or even find out the secret behind the temple’s many rats.

To gain deeper access to the temple, you have to solve a small puzzle at the beginning. In the side corridors you will find various levers to raise and lower the lanterns and then extinguish them. Keep the room in complete darkness to reveal glowing runes on the floor placed around the statue.

These runes are barriers that you cannot cross. However, each rune circle has a gap that you can maneuver through to reach the statue at the end. This will release the seal on the gate and allow access to the deeper levels of the temple.

    The path to the sanctuary

In the next few hours you will have to complete the various Shar tests in order to acquire a total of four shadowy gemstones.

The individual tests consist of fights, logic puzzles and a small stealth mission. You will receive the last gemstone from the demon Yurgir, who has also settled in the temple.

We’ll link a guide for the Shar’s individual samples here next week.

Once you have collected all the stones, you can activate the flying platform in the center of the temple and advance to the innermost sanctuary. There you can dive into a pool of water and enter the “Shadowfell” area. You should definitely save beforehand, because there is no way back from there (for now).

The fate of the night song

What happens in the Shadowfell depends heavily on your previous decisions. You have since revealed that the Night Song is not a weapon, but a person. A demigod being killed again and again by Shar followers as the final test for ascension to Dark Justiciar.

Depending on your previous decisions and those you are making now, there are different options:

  • You can leave the night song to Balthazar. Nightsong is then brought to General Thorm. You maintain your cover as members of the Cult of the Absolutes and gain more trust from the cult. If you don’t choose this option and Balthazar is still alive, you will have to fight him.
  • You can get Shadowheart to kill Nightsong. In this case, she completely dedicates herself to Lady Shar and becomes a Dark Justiciar with new powers and equipment.
  • You can stop Shadowheart from killing Nightsong. In this case, you disappoint the goddess Shar, but the Nightsong is freed and helps you throughout the story and even becomes a potential guest in the camp.
  • Which decision you make here should depend primarily on your story preference, as it will have a significant impact, especially on Shadowheart.

If this scene ends with Nightsong’s death, the quest will also be completed here, as delivery to the magician is no longer possible.

Act 3: Finding the Nightsong – Your Reward

Depending on what decisions you made previously, the Nightsong and/or her partner is now one of your companions in the camp. If the Nightsong is present, you can decide in Act 3 how you want to deal with her:

  • You can prove your loyalty to the Nightsong and fight against the magician who wanted to possess her.
  • You can betray the Nightsong and hand her over to the magician.
  • You can meet the magician Lorroakan in Baldur’s Gate. His mage tower is located above the large mage shop “Sorcerous Sundries”. You can enter the tower from the shop or library.

Whatever you decide here, the quest series for Nightsong inevitably ends. Here too, you can make the decision dependent on your favorite story choice. Even if you deliver the Nightsong, you can still rob the magician and take his possessions if you want.
