If you want to see Finding Nemo, you first have to go through a waterfall of tears. For many fans, nothing else has a traumatizing effect Death of Nemo’s mother Coral (Original voice: Elizabeth Perkins) within the first few minutes of the film.
As animator Jason Deamer now explains to Unilad, the extremely important scene was actually supposed to play out completely differently.
The Finding Nemo makers no longer liked their film after a test screening
Deamer reveals:
The death [von Nemos Mutter] originally only appeared in flashbacks. We had one last screening before the film was completely finished. We all came out of the cinema in silence [und dachten]: ‘Did we just make our first bad movie?’ […] We were worried, so co-director Lee Unkrich just said, ‘Let me play around a bit.’ Finally, he cut all the flashbacks to the beginning.

Nemo’s mother Coral at the beginning of Finding Nemo
At the beginning of Finding Nemo, a barracuda eats Nemo’s (Alexander Gould) mother and his unborn siblings. The scene has great emotional impact. Spreading them out over later flashbacks would also have made Nemo’s father Marlin (Albert Brooks) much less likeable, according to Deamer. “If you didn’t see the death of Nemo’s mother at the beginning, Marlin is seen as an over-anxious, annoying character“, said the animator.
The last-minute change was clearly worth it. Finding Nemo is considered by many to be one of the best animated films of all time and was a huge success both critically and at the box office. The equally enthusiastically acclaimed sequel Finding Dory followed in 2016.
