FINANCIAL EDUCATION: WHY WE NEED IT
According to a recent survey by Bank of Italy on the financial literacy and digital skills of young Italians, more than 70% of the sample examined (5,400 young people between 18 and 34 years old) know the concepts concerning the risk-return relationship and the evaluation of the cost of mortgages, but only 31% were prepared, for example, on the compound interest rate. Under half of respondents (35%) correctly answered questions about key economic concepts – inflation, interest rate and risk diversification.
The survey data also shows us that more than 80% of young Italians interviewed keep up to date on economic and financial issues mainly through social media, television and websites, with those aged between 18 and 23 indicating school and university among their favorite places to improve their financial skills. As age increases – we read in the report – the preference for banks and financial institutions as a source of information grows. Mobile applications are the preferred tool for learning.
