Finally there are the first details about Megalopolis

Director Francis Ford Coppola made film history with great classics like The Godfather and Apocalypse Now. His last work Twixt was 13 years ago, but now Coppola has made another new film at the age of 84. It bears the title Megalopolis and promises one mysterious science fiction epicin which Star Wars star Adam Driver plays an architect who wants to rebuild a kind of destroyed New York after a disaster.

So far there has only been a teaser image for Megalopolis and nobody knows when the film will be released exactly. Now Coppola’s work has been shown to a select group of friends and journalists. Also there was Deadline editor Mike Fleming Jr., who shared the first Megalopolis details with the world.

New sci-fi epic Megalopolis is described as visually gorgeous and full of ideas

In his Deadline article, Fleming Jr writes that the new Coppola film would be bursting with ideas and connect the past with the future. With a Running time of 2 hours and 13 minutes (without credits), the director is said to cover a complex range of topics, while the sci-fi film is said to be optimized for the massive IMAX screen format.

The plot revolves around a ruined metropolis that resembles New York, but the city is never exactly named and it is not clear when exactly Megalopolis takes place. In the story, Adam Driver plays the idealistic architect Cesar, who wants to rebuild the destroyed city and thereby clashes with his enemy Frank Cicero (Giancarlo Esposito), who is the mayor. Both argue about the extent to which Metropolis reconstructed with renewable materials or with the help of corruption shall be.

Also part of the plot is the mayor’s daughter Julia (Nathalie Emmanuel), who stands between the two men and is looking for meaning in her own life.

Megalopolis will not be the last film from master director Francis Ford Coppola

In his Deadline report, Mike Fleming Jr. also reveals that Megalopolis is not intended to be Coppola’s final work. The director said to him:

I knew Megalopolis was finished, because I had started working on a new film. It won’t be cheap by any means, but I don’t know if you can call it ‘an epic film’. Now the sci-fi film just needs a distributor and a theatrical release. According to rumors, Coppola’s Megalopolis could have its public world premiere at the upcoming Cannes International Film Festival in May.
