Finally a date for the appointment of the Prime Minister? What he should announce

Finally a date for the appointment of the Prime Minister

After the major consultation at the Élysée Palace on Friday, we are getting closer to the appointment of a new Prime Minister. Doubts remain as to his identity, but Emmanuel Macron is expected to speak to the French people on Monday. Consultations could resume at the beginning of the week.

When will we know the identity of Gabriel Attal’s replacement at Matignon? And above all, who will be the next Prime Minister? These questions have been going around in circles for six weeks, but we should have an answer in the coming days. According to The ParisianEmmanuel Macron is expected to speak on Monday to report to the French people on his consultations with parliamentary group and party leaders. But this speech will certainly not be the outcome of this affair.

According to several participants in the August 23 consultations, they should resume at the beginning of the week, perhaps on Tuesday. It must be said that new statements were made this weekend, notably from Jean-Luc Mélenchon. After the consultations, one thing seemed clear: the left could not reach Matignon since it would not resist a motion of censure. Indeed, almost the entire Assembly, except the NFP, had assured that it would not let a government led by Lucie Castets pass, in which there would be members of La France Insoumise. But Jean-Luc Mélenchon reshuffled the cards by asking a question: “The government of Lucie Castets, if it did not include any “insoumis” ministers, do you commit to not voting for censure and to allowing her to implement the program for which we came out on top in the legislative elections?”, adding: “If you answer us no, we will say that the “insoumis” ministers, in fact, it is a pretext, it is the program that you do not want.” A speech welcomed by the other parties of the New Popular Front, such as Olivier Faure’s PS and Marine Tondelier’s EELV.

This possibility of a Castets government without LFI could therefore open the door to Matignon to the left, but additional consultations seem necessary and will resume at the beginning of the week.

A name given on Wednesday?

These consultations cannot last too long either, given the impatience on both the right and the left of the hemicycle. According to a participant in Friday’s consultation, a member of the NFP, Emmanuel Macron should make his decision on Wednesday and announce it in the evening. “He reserves the right to come back to us,” he told France Info anonymously. It must be said that the Paralympic Games will begin on Wednesday, August 28 in Paris and will last until September 8. Parliament will resume at the end of October. A new government should be in place by then.
