In an interview, Naoki Yoshida, director and producer of Final Fantasy XIV, spoke about the community’s feedback on the current expansion, Dawntrail. The criticism of a speaker hit him hard.
What criticism is Naoki Yoshida about? After the launch of Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail, MeinMMO reported that the English voice of the female Hrothgar Wuk Lamat was sharply criticized by parts of the community.
The producer of Final Fantasy XIV explains in an interview on checkpointgaming.net that he was really affected by the reactions of some players.
There have been comments about how we are too accepting of diversity – some people seem to disapprove of that. I’m afraid that one of our employees received very negative comments and it felt like a personal attack, which breaks my heart because she worked really hard and this criticism was not constructive at all.
“Not at all constructive” means that Sena Bryer, the English voice actress of Wuk Lamat, received transphobic insults and death threats. According to Naoki Yoshida, this kind of feedback will never lead to a better gaming experience, and it hits completely the wrong person.
All this will do is cause employees to lose motivation, and that could end up affecting the quality of our game and distracting from what makes this game so interesting.
So if there is any kind of criticism, bring it to me because I am the one who approves this material. I would like to reiterate that we should refrain from personal attacks against our employees.

Patch 7.1 benefits from the criticism of Dawntrail
What else does Naoki Yoshida say? With the upcoming patch 7.1, the aim is to apply some of the lessons learned from player feedback on Dawntrail, according to the MMORPG’s chief developer.
With the next story chapters, the authors would like to better highlight what makes the character of Wuk Lamat so great. You can also expect the full range of features that you are used to from a major content patch for Final Fantasy XIV.
For example, the developers deliver the first part of the Alliance raid Echoes from Vana’diel, the Yuweyawata research station dungeon, the Gok Tajaal – Eternal Queen test, Fatale Raids (A Second Future), the Cloud of Darkness in the chaotic Alliance raid version , a new dream test and much more.
The first content package for the current Dawntrail expansion is called Crossroads and is scheduled to land on the live servers in mid-November 2024.
