Naoki Yoshida, director of Final Fantasy 14’s long-running MMO RPG, reveals how many more expansions he has planned after the Dawntrail expansion’s release.
A huge success for Square Enix, this MMO is a long-running game that has been supported since 2013. Producer and director Naoki Yoshida has a big part behind this, and he and his team are very informative to their audience and cast on what to expect for Final Fantasy 14. This includes expansions that have been added to the game over the years.
The long-lasting success of Final Fantasy 14
Square Enix recently held Final Fantasy 14 FanFest, where MMO fans gathered and celebrated the game. This is an event where competitions, arts and other events are held, as well as big announcements about the company’s games. This event also became known for the announcement that Dawntrail, the newest expansion to Final Fantasy 14, will arrive in summer 2024. This will be the game’s fifth expansion, but Yoshida explains that he’s considering at least two more expansions after that.
Director Naoki Yoshida’s plans for expansions
In an interview between the director and Famitsu, the interviewer stated that the Endwalker expansion basically ends the story that started in 2013. He asked Yoshida how far ahead he planned the story, as Dawntrail would be an entirely new story in the overall scheme.
While he couldn’t reveal any details, he did at least state that he had at least two expansions in mind after Dawntrail. He also said with a laugh that he will be 51 when this expansion debuts, and that he would like to release at least three more expansions when he reaches 60, and that’s the possibility.
Regarding the length of the story after Dawntrail, he noted that while the team didn’t plan the game as a story tied to Endwalker, they did leave hints between expansions to end the story entirely. Yoshida stated that they will do the same for the 7.0 update and that the length and size of the story will depend on the reactions of the audience.
Players who are new to the game can join the extended free trial of Final Fantasy 14. This trial version includes not only the base game, but also the Heavensward expansion, and has no playing time limits.
