With the three and a half hour long true crime epic Killers of the Flower Moon, Martin Scorsese has created a film that appears in many 2023 best lists. The director’s current work is also included in the list of the best films in the Moviepilot community.
But there is also criticism, which director and screenwriter Paul Schrader has now voiced again, for example. It concerns the casting of Leonardo DiCaprio.
Paul Schrader thinks Leonardo DiCaprio is Scorsese’s miscast
As Variety reports, Schrader spoke to French newspaper Le Monde about how he would have preferred to see DiCaprio play FBI agent Tom White in Killers of the Flower Moon:
Give him $200 million and a good movie will inevitably come out of it. However, I would have preferred to see Leonardo DiCaprio play the role of the cop in Killers of the Flower Moon rather than the role of the idiot. Three and a half hours is a long time to spend in the company of an idiot.
In fact, DiCaprio was initially slated to take on the role of Jesse Plemons. But Scorsese then decided that he didn’t want to make a film purely about white men. That’s why he greatly reduced Tom White’s part and cast DiCaprio as Ernest Burkhart instead.
The most famous collaboration between Martin Scorsese and Paul Schrader is Taxi Driver. Schrader wrote the script for the oppressive character study with Robert De Niro. When will Killers of the Flower Moon be available to stream?
